AI chat UX: retry or regenerate?
Ten recorded AI chat interfaces show Retry, Regenerate and response transformations. Design clear targeting, history, costs and failure recovery for revised answers.
Retry and Regenerate should not be interchangeable labels. Retry usually asks the product to attempt an operation that failed. Regenerate asks for a new output from a request that already produced a result. Make shorter transforms an existing answer. Editing the user’s prompt changes the request itself. A clear interface helps people choose among those intentions.
The action also needs a target. In a long conversation, does Regenerate apply to the response beside the menu, the latest answer or the entire exchange? What happens to the old version, later messages and any usage allowance? These consequences matter more than whether the action sits in a polished overflow sheet.
These ten recorded AI interfaces show visible response actions and failure states. They do not demonstrate model accuracy, response quality or a provider’s current technical behavior. Use them to design an explicit revision contract. A new answer is another output to evaluate, not a guarantee that an earlier error has been corrected.
Name the operation before placing it in a menu
Ask Agent groups Regenerate with Copy, Share, Export and Make Longer or Make Shorter. Chatbot AI Assistant shows a failed image result and Retry while retaining the request description. The contrast is useful: one offers alternatives to a completed response, while the other offers recovery from an unsuccessful operation.
Use Retry when the person can reasonably expect the same request to be attempted again. Explain whether the failure happened before submission, during processing or while retrieving an already completed result when that affects the next action. A retry that only reconnects to a running job should not create a second generation behind the same label.
Use Regenerate or Try another answer for a deliberate new variant. If it consumes a fresh allowance, show that before commitment where the consequence is material. Do not frame regeneration as Fix accuracy unless the product has a specific verified correction process. Preserve the request and the earlier output so the person can compare rather than lose evidence of what changed.

Attach the action to the response it changes
ChatSmith places RE-GENERATE and IMPROVE near a response, with an edit icon near the user’s message. NextGen places Share and Regenerate under a generated image. Their placement helps identify the intended output, but the interface still needs to explain whether the action replaces that output or creates another version.
Anchor the action to a stable message or result identifier rather than the latest row in the viewport. If a menu remains open while another response arrives, it should still refer to the item the person selected. Close or update the menu safely if that target is removed. Avoid a floating global Regenerate button whose meaning changes as new messages appear.
Editing a user prompt deserves a different interaction from regenerating an answer. Show the editable request and explain the effect on later conversation. The recorded ChatSmith screen shows an edit affordance, not the complete editing flow, so it should not be treated as evidence of a particular branching policy. Specify and test your own policy explicitly.

Keep transformations distinct from open-ended alternatives
Nova offers Copy and Regenerate on voice-chat responses while a draft remains in the composer. Genie separates Regenerate from Make Shorter and Make Longer in its action menu. A targeted transformation gives the person a more specific intention than asking for a completely new answer.
Explain what is retained during a transformation. Make shorter might preserve the subject and main facts while reducing length, but that is a requested operation, not a guaranteed quality claim. Show the result as a new version and keep a way back. Do not overwrite the composer draft with generated text merely because the person asked to revise an earlier response.
Avoid vague Improve as the only revision choice when the product supports clearer actions. Someone may want a shorter answer, a different tone, a corrected constraint or a new attempt at the same prompt. Offer the useful distinctions without turning the menu into a huge prompt catalog. Keep a route to editing the request for changes that cannot be expressed by a simple transformation.

Preserve enough history to make revision understandable
Chat AI PLUS includes Regenerate answer alongside favorites, sharing and Delete. Ask Me Anything lists Regenerate Response with other actions on a response. Their menus expose the action, but a menu alone does not establish what happens to the earlier version. That history policy needs its own visible treatment.
Choose between replacement, version navigation and conversation branching deliberately. Version navigation can keep several answers attached to one request. Branching can preserve later messages under the response they followed. If editing an earlier request removes subsequent messages, disclose that consequence before applying it. Do not silently erase a long exchange because an edit icon looked harmless.
Keep shared and exported copies in mind. Replacing the on-screen version does not rewrite text already copied elsewhere. If the product offers saved references to a response, decide whether they point to an immutable version or the currently selected version. Make that identity stable so a note or bookmark does not unexpectedly display different advice after regeneration.

Explain new work without hijacking the current draft
AI Expert exposes Regenerate near a translation response while the keyboard is open. ChatAI 5 Jane shows Copy and Regenerate with a visible remaining-chat allowance and upgrade controls. These contexts matter: the person may already be composing the next message, and the product may limit additional work.
State whether regeneration uses the same allowance as a new chat message or another category of work. A remaining balance does not explain the cost of this action. If the action is blocked, preserve the response, its selected version and any composer draft. An upgrade screen should not make the person rebuild the conversation after returning.
Prevent accidental duplicate operations while allowing intentional alternatives. A pending generation can show Cancel if cancellation is supported, but explain whether it stops computation, stops delivery or only leaves the screen when that distinction affects allowance. Do not refund visually before the server confirms the applicable rule. Billing and job state need to agree with the interface.

Track requests, jobs and response versions separately
Give the original user request, each processing job and each response version stable identifiers. A retry can then reconnect to a known job or create a deliberate new attempt according to the failure state. Do not use a repeated button tap as permission to submit the same expensive operation several times. Use a deduplication strategy appropriate to the operation and confirm acceptance before enabling another identical submission.
Snapshot the request context used for each version. If the person edits the composer while a result is pending, the completed answer must still belong to the submitted snapshot, not the newest text in the input. Preserve the previous answer during a failed regeneration, and show the failure beside the attempted version rather than replacing a usable response with a blank error.
Handle streaming and partial output explicitly. A canceled stream can remain a labeled partial response if useful, but should not look complete. A retry should not concatenate a second answer onto an unlabeled fragment. Keep side-effecting tools separate from text generation so asking for a revised explanation cannot accidentally repeat an external action such as sending a message or making a purchase.
Test the conversation, not just one answer
Create several messages, regenerate an earlier response, edit a prompt and compare versions. Ask the tester which text is active and which later messages depend on it. If the person cannot explain what was retained, the history model needs clearer treatment even if every request returns successfully.
Test a timeout before acceptance, a failure during generation, an interrupted stream and an allowance reached after the menu was opened. Confirm that the original response and composer draft survive. Check fast repeated taps and reopening the app during processing. The interface should identify whether an operation is pending, failed or complete without quietly submitting duplicate jobs.
Inspect keyboard overlap, menu focus and accessible action names. A screen reader should identify which response Regenerate will affect. Keep progress announcements useful without reading every streamed token repeatedly. Compare outputs for the user’s stated goal, but do not use regeneration count alone as a quality measure: people may request alternatives for style, exploration or preference rather than because the first answer was wrong.
Review the revision contract before the menu styling
Use these checks on a working build, not only on the polished reference state.
- Retry, Regenerate, transformations and prompt editing have distinct meanings.
- The selected response remains the target even if the conversation updates.
- Earlier versions and downstream messages follow an explicit history policy.
- Composer drafts survive response actions and upgrade interruptions.
- Allowance and cancellation consequences are explained before new work.
- Repeated taps and retries cannot silently duplicate the same job.
- Failed regeneration preserves the last usable response.
Questions and answers
Questions worth resolving before shipping
Should Retry consume another credit?
The product must define that rule according to what actually happened. Reconnecting to an existing job and creating a new charged generation are different operations. Explain the applicable consequence and keep the original request recoverable.
Should regenerating replace the earlier answer?
Not silently. Offer a clear version policy or explain replacement. Keeping the earlier version makes comparison and recovery possible, especially when the new attempt fails or is less useful.
Does Regenerate fix an inaccurate answer?
Not necessarily. It creates another output under the product’s generation rules. Avoid implying that another sample is verified or more accurate unless a separate validated correction process supports that claim.
