What it does
Tone It Up is a comprehensive fitness and nutrition app designed specifically for women. It combines structured, multi-week workout programs with a library of on-demand classes, meal plans, and individual recipes. The app aims to be a holistic wellness partner by also including features for community connection and mental well-being, like a daily journal.
Where it shines
Tone It Up excels at creating a structured yet flexible fitness ecosystem. The integration between workout programs and the user's calendar is a key strength (02:39). Once a user joins a program, their daily workouts are clearly laid out, removing the guesswork. The app also cleverly closes the wellness loop. For example, a workout completion screen at 03:02 immediately prompts the user to "refuel with protein," naturally guiding them toward the nutrition section. Finally, the map-based community feature (09:11) is a standout, transforming an abstract online group into a tangible, local network.
UX highlights
- Clear Progress Tracking: The app provides excellent visual feedback. Within a program, a progress bar shows workouts completed for the week (03:34), and individual videos get a checkmark, giving users a satisfying sense of accomplishment.
- Holistic Calendar: The calendar isn't just for workouts. Users can add recipes, custom workouts, and even detailed journal entries (07:45), making it a central hub for their entire wellness journey.
- Contextual Workout Player: The video player for workouts is well-designed. At 06:18, we can see it includes a scrubbable timeline and a button to view the full list of upcoming exercises in the circuit, allowing users to prepare mentally.
- Robust Filtering: The workout library features extensive filtering options (04:40). Users can filter by category, goals, duration, trainer, and equipment, making it easy to find the perfect workout for any situation.
- In-App Rating Prompt: The app uses a custom, two-step rating prompt (03:50). It first asks for a star rating within its own UI. If the rating is high, it then triggers the native App Store prompt, a smart way to filter for positive reviews.
Monetization & growth
The app presents its subscription offer after a detailed personalization quiz. This soft paywall (01:46) frames the purchase as the final step to unlock the custom plan the user just helped create. It offers two clear options, Annual and Monthly, both with a 7-day free trial. The annual plan is highlighted with a "SAVE BIG!" banner to encourage the higher-tier commitment. The user completes the purchase through the standard Apple payment sheet at 02:01.
Who it’s for
Tone It Up is clearly targeted at women seeking a structured and supportive fitness experience. The branding, language ("Welcome gorgeous!"), and community focus appeal to users who want more than just a workout logger. It's suitable for various fitness levels, as indicated by the onboarding quiz, and serves both those who want a guided week-by-week program and those who prefer to pick their own on-demand classes.
Notes & opportunities
While the app is feature-rich, the initial landing screen after subscribing (My Profile at 02:13) feels a bit empty and could be overwhelming. It places the burden on the user to click "Explore programs." A better experience might be to immediately present the personalized program that was just "created" for them. Additionally, while the map-based community is unique, the app could do more to facilitate interaction beyond just sending a connection request.
