What it does
BetterMe is an all-in-one health and fitness app that acts as a personal coach. It creates customized workout and meal plans based on a user's specific goals, body type, and lifestyle. Beyond physical exercise, it also integrates features for intermittent fasting, mental wellness through articles and audio content, and detailed progress tracking.
Where it shines
The app's greatest strength is its deep, quiz-based personalization. The onboarding flow (00:32 - 03:11) is a marathon of questions that makes the user feel truly seen, building significant investment before a price is ever mentioned. The workout player itself is polished and clear, with video demonstrations and audio cues (05:00). Finally, its holistic approach, combining workouts with fasting (13:03) and mental health content (06:52), makes it a comprehensive wellness tool rather than just a simple exercise app.
UX highlights
- The onboarding quiz uses an interactive 3D avatar for selecting target body areas, making a typically boring step feel more engaging (01:24).
- After completing a workout, the app delivers a playful celebration animation with stars and emoji hands, providing satisfying positive reinforcement (05:53).
- The fasting feature includes a clean, circular timer and educational cards that explain what's happening in the body at each stage (13:55).
- The app uses a system of badges to gamify progress, rewarding users for milestones like completing a first workout or reading an article (16:20).
- The meal plan section is well-organized by day and meal type, with clear calorie counts and appealing photography for each recipe (16:57).
- The app effectively uses permissions warm-ups, for example, to explain why it needs notification access before triggering the system prompt (01:03).
Monetization & growth
BetterMe employs a hard paywall strategy. Users must complete the extensive onboarding quiz before being presented with a subscription offer at 03:35. The initial offer is a free trial that converts to a monthly plan, with the price broken down by week to appear more affordable. What's most aggressive is its post-subscription upsell funnel. Immediately after a user commits, the app presents a series of one-time offers for specialized programs, such as a Sugar-Free Challenge (03:57) and a Flat Belly Challenge (04:15), to maximize initial LTV.
Who it’s for
This app is for individuals looking for a structured, all-encompassing wellness plan who are willing to pay for a premium, guided experience. The detailed onboarding suggests it targets users who are serious about making a change and believe that a highly personalized plan is the key to their success. It's less for casual users and more for those ready to commit to a comprehensive lifestyle overhaul.
Notes & opportunities
The onboarding flow is exceptionally long, which could lead to significant user drop-off. While it effectively qualifies leads, shortening the quiz or showing value earlier could improve completion rates. The back-to-back upsells after subscribing might feel overwhelming for some users and could potentially lead to immediate subscription cancellations or a negative first impression. Introducing a more gentle welcome before presenting add-on offers could be a worthwhile test.
